The nano valve is here at UCLA
NEWS.
It is all based on switchable rotaxane molecules that can be embedded in silicon based electronic circuits and activated by the photoelectric effect. The major implementation shall be a "Sieve On
Demand" to allow molecules to pass at will from such a nano-membrane. It is predicted to be used for medical applications but I think that that would be a
minor application. The real merit of having a nano scale valve is incorporating
it in a much more complex design along with other nano-technology innovations.
Just imagine a pipe made of carbon fibre and a liquid polymer flow is being controlled by such a valve for any reasonable but fabtastic application at that
scale.
Nanotechnology scientific breakthroughs shall continue coming up this year (2005), to be ready for an explosion of applications on 2006. The most expectable applications would be related to health and medicine as well as interfacing with the brains of mammals. This translates to the most concise title of "Biochemical Nanotechnology", however, we can equally expect incredible applications in the world of electronics and information, communication and new materials with unprecedented qualities. Some security applications would be invented as well because such technology will not be that available for forgers and outlaws. Also new types of magnets with nano-scale technology can demonstrate new levels of magnetic density and consequently smaller and more powerful motors. |
